About this group course

What are you pointing your camera at, and why? Is there a link between the photographs you take? Could someone connect your shots as being from the same person? A way to push your photography skills higher is to take several pictures on a single theme. This technique is called a 'Photo Project,' where you try to tell a story through a series of images.

Photography Projects are generally considered to be six or more images with a consistent theme. Typically, these images are processed similarly, all in black & white, and/or vertical OR horizontal OR square. Your story does not have to be very involved, it does not have to be earth-shattering, and the theme does not have to be self-evident; it just needs a common link between them.

Because technical skills are less critical for these types of images, digital cameras used in Auto and Program Modes are an ideal tool for dipping a toe into this exciting form of photography. All photos are shot on the participants' digital cameras and processed on the their phones. Indepth instruction is given on using the free mini-Photoshop App compatible with all camera phones.

Images submitted for the various assignments receive gentle and supportive critiquing; this is crucial for participants to enhance their learning. Critiquing covers composition, processing tips, prompts for what works well, and suggestions for resolving things that do not.

Most of the time on this course is spent teaching visual storytelling skills, helping participants develop sophisticated visual ideas while teaching them how to analyze images skilfully. At the end of the course, they will present personal, meaningful, and imaginative photographic responses.

A vital part of this course is the three photography projects, the first set by the tutor and the other two chosen by the learner. Both projects are exhibited in special virtual exhibitions, where participants can show off their work to the world.

A previous participant of the course said: "Dave made the classes so interesting and, while giving constructive feedback, he also taught me that no photo is a bad photo, that beauty lies in the eye of the beholder."

The goal of this course is to help whet learners' creative appetites and set them on the road of this compelling form of photography. The content is ideal for those who wish to channel their creative energies into an easy and inexpensive outlet.

Learners can use any digital camera for the photography, and any Android, iOS, or Windows camera phone or tablet for the image editing.
